Learning ERP Through Decisions: A Quest-Based Simulation for Management Education

Abstract

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems integrate organizational processes and decision-making across multiple business functions, yet novice students often struggle to understand these interdependencies when introduced directly to complex ERP software. This study presents ERP Quest Simulator, a quest-based educational artifact developed using a design science research approach to scaffold ERP Thinking before students engage with full ERP systems. Drawing on ERP integration, cognitive load, scaffolding, experiential learning, and game-based learning theories, the simulator incorporates six role-based quests involving managerial decisions, cross-functional consequences, key performance indicator (KPI) feedback, and reflective learning. A working prototype demonstrates how students can explore the operational, financial, and customer-related consequences of their decisions through interactive scenarios and immediate feedback. The study contributes a multidimensional conceptualization of ERP Thinking and introduces a low-barrier, decision-centered approach to introductory ERP education. Future research will evaluate the simulator through expert review, classroom pilot testing, student feedback, and decision-log analysis
