Abstract

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) in the clinical setting are the primary providers of clinical education for Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs). Nurse anesthesia programs require a minimum of 550 cases in defined categories and 2000 clinical hours (AACN, 2015). SRNAs are assigned to a clinical site rather than a specific preceptor. The student-to-preceptor ratio varies from 1:1 to 2:1 depending on the SRNA’s experience level and the requirements of the clinical site. Adult learning principles are not often taught in anesthesia curriculum, and many clinical educators do not receive training before being asked, or frequently told, to ascend to the preceptor role (Elisha, 2008; Elisha & Rutledge, 2011). Because the SRNA will interact with many clinical educators in their training, all CRNA preceptors should receive education to provide a beneficial clinical experience for the SRNA.
